This processing module offers excellent dynamic control by clipping peaks instead of using traditional peak limiting. It utilizes soft peak clipping to deliver more transparent results.
Hard clipping can introduce numerous lower-order harmonics, often straddling the line between sounding pleasant and overly harsh. In contrast, soft clipping starts becoming non-linear at a lower threshold, preserving dynamics while adding rich harmonic content.
Soft clipping results in a more analog-like sound as it gently rounds off peaks rather than chopping them harshly.
The T-RackS Classic Clipper is straightforward to use with just a few controls: Gain, Slope, and Output. IK Multimedia suggests using it as a final stage of dynamic control or to generate harmonic saturation.
Personally, I’m a fan of IK Multimedia. They consistently get things right, and despite occasional criticism about their product management, users generally appreciate the quality of their plugins.
