Hi! As you already know, on this blog I also share news stories related to music — not just things that happen “in the box.”Because unfortunately, music is also this — and we need to be aware of it.
It was a warm Wednesday evening, July 2, 2025, in Chicago’s River North district. Outside the Artis Lounge, the mood was electric: friends, fans, and collaborators had gathered to celebrate Hollyhood,
the brand-new album by Mello Buckzz, the 24-year-old rapper who had already turned heads with her track “Boom Pt 2” featuring Latto.
Then, around 11 p.m., everything changed.
A dark car pulled up. Windows rolled down. And in a matter of seconds, at least three people inside opened fire on the crowd leaving the club. The beat of the night was drowned out by gunshots, screams, and the chaos of people running for cover. Moments later, the flashing lights of police cars and ambulances painted the street in red and blue.
✨ It Was Supposed to Be a Night of Joy
For Mello Buckzz (real name Melanie Doyle), the release party marked a milestone: months of work, hope, and late nights finally shared with her loved ones and supporters.
Instead, in just seconds, she lost two of the closest people in her life: her boyfriend and her best friend.
On social media, her heartbreak poured out in raw, desperate words:
“feel like everything just weighing down on me… all i can do is talk to god and pray”
“I can’t believe i lost both yall in 1 night… my heart is broke into so many pieces”
💔 The Toll of Violence
When the gunfire ended, the scene left behind was devastating:
- Four lives lost: two men aged 24 and 25, and two women.
- 14 others wounded, aged between 21 and 32; at least four are in critical condition.
A street that just hours earlier had been full of laughter, music, and celebration was now marked by grief.
🕵️♂️ An Unsolved Crime
Police confirmed this was a drive-by shooting carried out by multiple shooters inside the vehicle.
The car sped away, and so far, no arrests have been made. Investigators are urging anyone who saw what happened to come forward, hoping to bring answers to the victims’ families.
🔍 Part of a Bigger Picture
Sadly, this isn’t an isolated tragedy. Across the U.S., 195 mass shootings have already been reported in 2025 alone (The Sun).
And the venue itself has a tragic history: when it operated as Hush Lounge, it was the scene of another shooting back in November 2022.
📌 Beyond the Numbers
Behind every headline, every statistic, there are real people and shattered dreams.
Mello Buckzz’s words remind us of that truth: what should have been a night of triumph turned into unimaginable loss.
