FREE CHOW TAPE MODEL

🎛 Chow Tape Model: Analog Tape Saturation for Free

If there’s one plugin I think every producer should have in their toolbox, it’s Chow Tape Model. Not just because it’s free, but because it captures the warmth, grit, and saturation of classic reel-to-reel tape machines — in a way that’s surprisingly authentic.

🔍 What is Chow Tape Model?

Chow Tape Model is a free tape machine emulation plugin by chowdsp. It was originally designed to model the Sony TC-260, but it’s evolved into a much more flexible tool capable of emulating a wide range of analog tape decks.

It’s not just another analog-style plugin. It’s a physically modeled system that brings the quirks and nuances of tape saturation, wow/flutter, and head spacing into your mix.

📚 The Academic Backstory

What’s unique about this plugin is that it wasn’t born in a commercial lab — but in a classroom.

Chow Tape was originally developed as part of Music 420 at Stanford University, and eventually became a research paper titled:

“Real-Time Physical Modelling for Analog Tape Machines”

Presented at the 2019 DAFx Conference.

So yes, it’s grounded in actual DSP research, not just marketing fluff. And it’s open-source.

🎧 How I Use It to Emulate the Ampex A800

If you’ve followed me, you know I love recreating old-school chains like:

Vinyl → MPC60 → SSL G-Series Console → Ampex A800 Tape

To get close to the Ampex A800 sound using Chow Tape Model, here’s my go-to setting:

  • Speed: 15 ips (for punchy bass and warm mids)
  • Bias: 0.35
  • Saturation: 0.6
  • Drive: 0.6
  • Flutter: Depth 0.05, Rate 0.3
  • (Optional) EQ after tape: roll off ~2dB @ 14kHz for authenticity

👉 This gives me a thick, round, saturated sound that glues samples, drums, or vocals beautifully — especially for that golden-era hip-hop tone.

🧩 Where to Put It in the Chain?

It depends on the use case. Here are two quick examples:

➤ To Color a Sample

  1. Bitcrusher @ 12bit / 40kHz (MPC60 feel)
  2. Chow Tape Model (set like A800)
  3. EQ / Compression as needed

➤ For Master Bus Tape Emulation

  1. Insert on the stereo bus
  2. Add subtle bus compression after
  3. Light clipper or limiter for final glue

✅ Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • 100% Free
  • Impressively analog sound
  • Deep parameter control
  • Great for hip-hop, lofi, vintage soul, dub, and experimental

❌ Cons

  • Slight learning curve if you’re used to “one-knob” plugins
  • Can sound harsh if you crank the input too much

🔗 Final Thoughts

Whether you’re chasing a warm tape feel, gritty lo-fi color, or you’re just curious about physical modeling — Chow Tape Model is a must-download.

You can grab it here:

Let me know in the comments (or in the Plugheads group) how you’re using it. And if you want, I’ll drop a downloadable Logic Pro preset with my A800-style settings soon.

Stay creative,
