A Journey Back in Time with Giulioz Smol Rack RRV-10
The world of music production in the 1980s was a completely different place compared to today. Back then, reverb plugins were nonexistent. Hardware was a necessity: if you wanted to add reverb to your tracks, you either recorded in a large, empty room with microphones or relied on dedicated hardware units.
One of the most affordable solutions of that time was the Boss Micro Rack RRV-10, a compact rack unit offering several reverb algorithms at an accessible price. This device left an indelible mark, and many musicians still hold it in high regard. Now, thanks to the work of a talented developer named Giulioz, we can relive that iconic sound with a free plugin: the Giulioz Smol Rack RRV-10.
Emulating the Past
The Smol Rack RRV-10 is a plugin that faithfully emulates the Boss Micro Rack RRV-10 from the 1980s. To create this emulation, Giulioz used the HG61H20R36F chip, replicated through the MUNT project. This technical detail highlights the dedication to making the experience as authentic as possible.
Like its hardware predecessor, the plugin offers nine algorithms:
- Room 1 (small)
- Room 2 (large)
- Hall 1 (small)
- Hall 2 (large)
- Plate 1 (small)
- Plate 2 (large)
- Multi-Tap 1 (delay)
- Multi-Tap 2 (reverse)
- Gated Reverb
The available parameters are identical to those of the vintage unit. You can shape the reverb tone by adjusting the decay time and pre-effect EQ. Controls for balancing the direct and effect signals (dry/wet) are also included.
A Hardware Feel in a Plugin
What impressed me is the attention to detail. On the left side of the plugin, there is a switch to turn the effect on and off, providing a tactile feel reminiscent of the original hardware. However, the main power switch on the right doesn’t seem to work in the current version. I’m hopeful for an update to address this minor issue.
Looking Ahead
In addition to the RRV-10, Giulioz is working on other emulations from the Micro Rack series, including the Chorus Ensemble, Digital Delay, RSD-10 Sampling Delay, RPD-10 Panning Delay, and RPS-10 Digital Pitch Shifter. Each device uses different chips, making the replication process a challenging endeavor. I’m excited to see what the future holds for this series.
Final Thoughts
The Giulioz Smol Rack RRV-10 is more than just a plugin: it’s a bridge to an era when music production was both a technical and creative challenge. Whether you’re nostalgic for the 1980s or simply curious to explore the charm of vintage sound, this plugin deserves a place in your arsenal. And the best part? It’s free. Try it out and immerse yourself in its unique reverb.
